Performing has always been a big part of my life. Having grown-up with both parents in theater, I know
at a young age that I too would find a place on the stage and it would be through dance that I would find
my fit.
I grew up, like many small children, in dance. At the ago of three, I began tumbling—followed by ballet,
tap and jazz. I continued dance through my younger years but ended up perusing other hobbies in my
teens. It wasn’t until college that I continued my love for dance. I performed with Johari Dance Troupe
at Purdue University from 2000-2003. Johari was an African dance troupe that performed around the
state and with incredible individuals such as Maya Angelou.
During my four years at Purdue, I also took 3 semesters of Modern Dance. It wasn’t until my senior year
that I decided to challenge myself in professional dance for the NFL. I tried out for Colts Cheerleading
and was accepted to represent my team and state in 2003-2004.
After cheerleading, I danced for two years for an aspiring young hip-hop artist out of Chicago. We
performed both in Chicago and in Indianapolis. After taking a little over a year off dance and after
relocating to downtown Indianapolis, I passed by a charming little dance studio with a sign in the
window that said, Into Salsa. It was there that I spent most of my dance experience learning Latin
Dance. Owner Yang Xiao taught me Salsa, Bachata, Cha-Cha and Marangua. I quickly fell in love with
the music and style of Latin dance and within about 4 months, I began teaching beginning salsa
alongside Yang.
I joined an all-ladies dance group called Las Chica’s El Meson that performed for Latin dance club, El
Meson, on the north side of Indianapolis. I also performed with an all-girls group called Cadencias
Latinas, that represented into Salsa and performed for many local events including salsa congresses
member, I soon began teaching choreography alongside Yang. Sadly, after over 10 years, the studio
closed its doors but my love for dance continues to grow.
This is my second year performing with Dancing our the Stars event in Noblesville, Indiana benefiting
Meals on Wheels. This will be my fifth year performing with Dancing Like the Stars event in Anderson. I
am honored to be part of such of such an amazing fundraiser and look forward too many more years
ahead.
